By Mariah Cannon

You’ve more than likely not heard of small town Port Orford on the coast of Oregon’s breathtaking cliffsides, or maybe you have, one thing I know; you’re going to want to visit after reading all of these things to do!

Port Orford is quant Southern Coastal town in Oregon with the population being 1,135 and the only grocery store being a tiny Ray’s. You wouldn’t think much of anything to do in this mostly drive through town, however there are so many fun things in and around the area. I highly recommend spending a day or two checking out all Port Orford has to offer. So, without further ado, let’s get into it!

1. Stop and grab a bite to eat at The Crazy Norwegian’s Fish and Chips. This place is small and more on the affordable side for seafood in the area. They are known to have literally some of the best fish & chips along the coastline and many stop here to try it out. They are open Wednesday-Saturday 12pm to 7pm, closed Monday and Tuesdays. They have a super family feel atmosphere on top of everything, how could you not want to check it out?!

2. Get your hike on through Port Orford Heads State Park, here you’ll find three main trails that leave from the Museum/main parking lot. The Cove, Tower, and Headland trails. The area is engulfed in history and is a fun area to explore for all to enjoy!

3. The West Coast Game Park Safari is a fun adventure for families and young ones, they have over 450 different types of animals and some even roam around for you to feed, walk with, and pet! They are open 7 days a week, 10am-5pm.

4. Another fun, family friendly place to check out is the Prehistoric Gardens, a journey through time where you’ll walk through a jungle like scene with tons of different dinosaurs scattered throughout. The entrance fee is $14 per person, the more people you have the cheaper it is!

5. Humbug Mountain Trail is a beautiful coastal trail within Humbug Mountain State Park. Once you reach the summit, you look out over a large majority of the coastline. The trail can be kind of steep and slippery when it’s rainy out.

6. If you’re visiting the coast, you have to make a stop at a lighthouse! Cape Blanco Lighthouse is right outside of Port Orford and it makes a really fun stop. There’s expansive views of the rugged coastline. It’s a short walk from the parking area to get up to the lighthouse and once you’re there, there is a gift shop that is open May-Oct and closed only on Tuesdays. This lighthouse is located on the state’s most westernmost point.

7. Battle Rock park is a fun stop right in town and you can walk the Battle Rock Wayfinding Point Beach Trail, a 2 mile beach walk with the ocean at your feet and incredible rock formations.

8. Be sure to stop at Sisters Rock State Park where you can walk along the mile long trail to Sisters Rock, there is no sign off the highway for this area, it’s about 13 miles outside of Port Orford and is a small turnoff.

9. Floras Lake Waterfall Trail is a 5 mile round-trip trail that takes you through Floras Lake State Natural Area through the beautiful coastline to a huge rock cave and waterfall by the beach. It is insane and totally worth a stop!

10. Grab a bite of some seafood and American dishes from Redfish, right next to the Battle Rock Beach, you’ll get sweeping views of the Pacific and Beach below.

Enjoy these ideas for your trip to Port Orford? Be sure to save it for future travels!

You can usually find me exploring with my dog Maverick, taking photos, planning my next adventures, or trying to find the world’s best ice cream.

Born and raised in rural Oregon, my love for adventuring was always there, but came on heavily in my late teenage years. I truly felt the need to see everywhere! So I began searching for the best places to visit in the U.S. and the best hikes in Oregon and was flustered with the lack of information on trails and areas – leading me to “Mariah Adventures” to create a travel and adventure blog to help everyone find places to explore!
