Idaho is full of little hidden gems that are absolutely gorgeous! Especially when it comes to Fall time!
In Fall of 2025, I visited this Preserve just a little bit West of Twin Falls, Idaho. It proved to be super gorgeous & super peaceful!
I took my pup, Maverick, and we headed off on an early morning adventure to hike the box canyon springs, so here’s everything you need to know about your visit and why it should be on your list to visit!
Where is Box Canyon Springs Preserve?
Located just an hour and 45 minutes away from Boise, it’s a wonderful day trip to venture out to.
From Boise, jump on I-84 Eastbound towards Twin Falls. You’ll remain on the interstate for 100 miles until you reach exit 155. Then proceed right onto E 2950 S/Hagerman Rd for 12 miles and then your destination will be on the right.
Things to Know Before You go
- Be sure to have any maps you’ll need downloaded as service can be limited in areas.
- Avoid heat and rattlesnakes by going early in the day or later in the evening. The best seasons are Fall, Winter, and Spring here – when it’s less hot!
- It’s the 11th largest spring in North America
- Open daily from 7am-10pm.
- It’s $7/per day to visit here or if you have an Idaho State Parks Passport, you can get in “free”.
- Be cautious of wildlife – I have ran into coyotes while hiking the top part of the loop and there’s could be potential for cougars down in the canyon areas as well.
- Dogs are allowed, but need to remain on leash.
Hiking Box Canyon Springs
Distance: 2.9 miles round-trip
Elevation: 347 feet
Hike Type: Loop
Difficulty: Easy-moderate
This trail is one loop and you can go either way, however I recommend starting clockwise so you get the more boring side out of the way first! You’ll drop down into the canyon on an old access road and see some neat rock formations and have a cool view of the Snake river where you’ll see pelicans, ducks, geese, and more.
Down in the bottom of the canyon, you’ll walk right along the flowing springs. There are “do not enter” and “danger” signs over the water and springs and it’s our job to respect those signs and not ruin the area for future adventurers!
The main attraction of this hike, is the waterfall down in the canyon. It isn’t very tall, but it’s a wide, super flowy falls and it’s stunning, especially during the fall when the colors are surrounding it.
After the waterfall, you begin climbing back up to the canyon towards the parking lot and have a really pretty canyon view.
This trail is a great one for the whole family to visit!
