About Overton
Pronounced just as it reads, lays a Nevada oasis. In the early years, Overton had the only shopping store in the entire Moapa (Muddy River) Valley area. In the 1930’s, Lake Mead got filled and wiped out a town called St. Thomas – after the wipe out, a majority of the population moved to the Overton area. There is tons of geographical and religious history throughout Overton.
Best Time to Visit
Of course, the desert of Nevada is going to be a typically hot place to visit regardless of time of year. I visited during late May and temps were easily in the mid 80’s already. Peak times to visit are September-November when the temps are a little milder and monsoon season is not quite in full swing. June-August will be the hottest to visit, but also typically the most budget friendly as not a lot are traveling during the hottest time of year.
If you’re wanting to check out all of the things mentioned in this blog, mid Spring/Fall is the most idea time to experience all that Overton has to offer!
Getting to Overton
If you’re driving, here’s some nearby towns!
- Las Vegas, NV: 46 miles, 1 hour
- St. George, UT: 78 miles, 1 hour and 20 minutes
- San Bernadino, CA: 230 miles, 3 hours and 20 minutes
- Phoenix, AZ: 260 miles, 4 hours
If you plan on flying in, the easiest place to fly into would be Las Vegas International Airport (LAS). For this itinerary this is also where the weekend starts, making it a prime airport.
There are some other small municipal airports around the southern part of Nevada, though finding cost efficient flights is more difficult.
Getting Around Overton
The easiest way to get around is by car, a lot of the places I’ll mention will be spread out within the desert.
Places to Stay
If you’re wanting to stay in Overton, be prepared to find little accommodations. It’s a relatively small community and there isn’t many grand options. If you’re wanting a fancier/full amenities stay – I recommend staying in or around North Vegas.
I camped in Red Rock Canyon and thoroughly enjoyed it. While staying here, you’re close to North Vegas for any errands, but also far enough out to still feel immersed in nature. Some other areas to stay are:
Day 1
- Start your day off by grabbing some breakfast and coffee at Kuppa Joe Coffee.
- Make your way over to Red Rock Canyon for an epic scenic drive, some hiking, and rock climbing! There is something here for everyone, regardless of your adventure level type. Some of my favorite trails are:
- After visiting Red Rock Canyon, make the 30 minute drive to Seven Magic Mountains; a art structure of painted boulders that has become a popular photo spot. If you arrive early enough, you’ll have the unique spot to yourself.
- Once you’ve worked up an appetite, grab some delicious Mexican food from La Fonda!
Day 2
- Start your second and last morning in Overton with some breakfast from The Egg and I, a popular breakfast spot near North Vegas.
- After fueling up, make your way to Valley of Fire State Park. Here you’ll find mountain goats, epic trails, red rock, and vast landscape for exploring. Want to get your hiking shoes dirty? Here’s some of my favorite ones:
- Once you’ve had your fair share of red rock, make the short drive over to The Lost City Museum, here you’ll find tons of history on the area and a gorgeous building constructed by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) – it’s worth the stop!
- After a full day exploring, clean up for a delicious dinner from Evel Pie; an American Pizza place.
- Finish off your time in Overton by enjoying a sweet treat from the Ghirardelli Ice Cream Shop (I KNOW, crazy) but oh so good.
Like the itinerary? Pin it for future travels!
Let’s get adventuring!
