Taggart Lake Hiking Guide; Grand Teton National Park

By Mariah Cannon

If you plan on visiting Grand Teton National Park, this lake trail needs to be on your list. It is absolutely stunning in any season and gets you a wonderful view of the Tetons! Today we’re going to talk about all things Taggart Lake and give you the confidence to explore the lake when you get to visit!

Where is Taggart Lake?

Located in the southern region of Grand Teton National Park, just 5 miles South of the Jenny Lake visitor center parking area – you’ll find the parking area on the right side of Teton Rd. The parking area is big enough for 60+ cars and can fill up rather quickly despite being quite a large parking lot. I recommend arriving early in the morning or later in the day towards sunset to be able to enjoy the lake with smaller crowds and easier lighting for photos!

Things to Know Before Going to Taggart Lake

  1. As I mentioned before, the parking lot fills up quick. It’s a very popular hike to do while in the Tetons and can get especially busy on nice days and in the Summer months.
  2. Being right below the Tetons, weather can change when you least expect it. Be sure to come prepared with a layer or two, some water, and snacks.
  3. Be on wildlife alert – this area is common to have moose, bear, deer, and other wildlife. It’s important to have bear spray and keep your distance from any animals you may encounter to the best of your ability.
  4. Because of all of the wildlife, it’s important to leave no trace. Pack out everything you pack in – it saves lives all around!

Hiking Taggart Lake

Distance: 4.4 miles round-trip

Elevation: 538 feet

Hike Type: Typically is a loop – currently an out and back (Summer/Fall 2025) it is closed due to a bridge being out. Will update when open. I recommend hiking clockwise when the full loop is open. Right now you can only go in clockwise and come out the same.

Difficulty: Moderate – only due to a couple of steep sections as you near the lake – otherwise the trail is pretty flat and easy.

The above stats are what it is for the out and back as the loop is currently closed. When the bridge is fixed, it’s about 3.8 miles with 420 feet of gain, so going back out the way you come in is a little bit more difficult.

You can also add to this loop by hiking an additional 2 miles round-trip to Bradley Lake, another gorgeous lake with incredible views and typically less people.

Other Things to Check Out Near Taggart Lake

  1. Stop by Jenny Lake and hike the Jenny Lake Shoreline Trail
  2. Catch sunrise at Oxbow Bend
  3. Stop by Gros Ventre Campground to see if you can find any moose around! This is a popular area for them to be around for people to photograph. This is a campground and visitors of wildlife are expected to park in the amphitheater parking area. Remember to keep your distance from wildlife. Admire from a safe distance.

Final Thoughts

Taggart Lake is a must visit when you’re in Grand Teton National Park & if you’ve only got time for one hike or one area, this should be it! It gets you close to the Tetons and the water is stunning. You’re also super close to Jenny Lake as mentioned above, making it the perfect area to explore for one day in the Tetons!

The first time I visited the Tetons, I didn’t even know about this lake because I was so focused on Jenny Lake and the famous boat ride – so I’m definitely glad I got to do it this time around.
